“If we pray...we will believe. If we believe...we will love. If we love...we will serve.” Mother Teresa

While many are caught up in the excitement of the holidays, there are even more families who find the holidays to be difficult. For five Gehlen Catholic families in December 2017, those struggles have been made easier thanks to the Tim Dreckman Memorial Fund.

With nearly 3 of out of 4 Gehlen Catholic families living at or below 300% of the poverty level for the 2016-2017 school year, the 7th anniversary of the Tim Dreckman Memorial Fund couldn’t have been more important.

In the summer of 2016, the Tim Dreckman family did something unique. First, in the summer of 2016, the Dreckmans first invested over $3,000 to purchase furniture for the newly added second preschool classroom, benefitting the 25 4-year old preschoolers.

As in the past, the Dreckmans also purchased school supplies for 39 students in Transitional Kindergarten through 12thgrade. Finally, on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 the Dreckmans awarded 2 families, with a total of 6 students, to assist with all of their children’s tuition in December.

Eligible families are required to meet all of the following criteria:

  • Two or more children enrolled at Gehlen Catholic, with at least one child in elementary; or
  • One or more child/ren enrolled in the Success Center and/or one or more learning difficulties, including but not limited to visual, auditory, or other related impairments; and
  • The parents must be involved in the school, church, and/or community.

Earlier the fall of 2016, interested families submitted an essay outlining how they met the aforementioned criteria. To protect the applicant’s anonymity, each family was assigned a number by the Development Office. The recipients were selected by the Dreckman family and notified afterwards by the Development staff.

As of December 2016, the Dreckman family, between preschool classroom furniture, school supplies, and tuition assistance more than $4,539.00.

The Tim Dreckman family has been surprised by the impact their memorial has had. Since its inception in 2009, the fund has provided school supplies and gift certificates to the BirdHouse for dress code items to 225 new students enrolling at Gehlen Catholic School. These gifts have totaled $4,218.95.

In tuition assistance dollars alone, $16,761.30 has been awarded to 113 students. Between school supplies, gift certificates to the BirdHouse, tuition assistance, & preschool furniture, nearly $24,000 has been invested to date.

All of this year’s recipients were humbled to ask and were so appreciative to have received their awards. One in particular stated they are very blessed to have the assistance in light of one of their children’s health problems. One of the child’s parents changed jobs, so they could care for their child. The job change resulted in a decrease in the family’s tuition. One of their older children has learning difficulties, which requires the student to receive speech therapy daily and Title I reading. The tearful parents thanked the Tim Dreckman family for their generosity.

The other family, equally as moved, stated Gehlen Catholic was the only choice for their children, as their faith is the most important priority. The second family concluded, “They (Gehlen Catholic) focus the children on making a difference in themselves, as well as in the community through many service projects. Gehlen Catholic is a community itself; a community that strives to make our children the best they can be!”

Barb and the Dreckman children shared, “We thank everyone for their donations throughout the years to the Tim Dreckman Memorial Fund in helping to assist families with their struggles.”

Individuals and businesses can make their simple tax-deductible gift of $20 or more for school supplies and/or tuition assistance. Donations should be sent to the Tim Dreckman Memorial Fund % Gehlen Catholic School

As one of Tim and Barb’s daughter’s commented, “It is wonderful we can help families that struggle at Christmas to not have to burden themselves with a tuition payment! This has all been made possible because of people like you, and others, through your generous donations. We prayerfully ask for your continued support in 2017.”

The Tim Dreckman Memorial Fund was established in December 2009. Barb and her children said, “Tim was a loving husband and dedicated father. Gehlen Catholic is a special place filled with staff, volunteers, and families. Through this gift, we want to share Tim’s love of Gehlen Catholic and to ensure his love and legacy lives on through you & your family.” God called Tim home, unexpectedly, at the young age of 52, on February 26, 2007.
